The Winning Traits Trevian Carson Brings To The Bearcats

Championship caliber teams aren’t solely built by stars. They’re built by players who fill every crack in the foundation. Trevian Carson might just be Cincinnati’s next one. Sometimes the most valuable additions are the ones who impact winning in ways that don’t always grab headlines.

After spending two seasons at Des Moines Area Community College, Carson made the jump to North Dakota State and quickly established himself as one of the Summit League’s most complete, and well-rounded guards. The 6’3, 200lb combo guard earned First Team All-Summit League and All-Defensive Team honors while averaging 11.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He shot an efficient 48% from the field, 37.5% from three-point range, and 80% from the free throw line, while logging just over 31 minutes per game.

While his numbers are very solid, Carson’s value extends far beyond filling up the basket. His ability and knack to rebound the ball at an elite level for his position, defend multiple spots and cause turnovers makes him the type of player that can impact the game on both ends of the floor. With Cincinnati entering it’s first season under Jerrod Calhoun, those traits should fit like a glove into the identity the Bearcats are trying to build.

Calhoun’s aggressive defense system thrives on creating havoc, forcing turnovers, and turning defense into offense. This past season, Utah state ranked 26th across all teams in steals per game, averaging 8.7 as a team. Carson’s 1.8 per game points to why he could be a very important piece from day one. Carson possesses the versatility to fill a variety of roles depending on team needs, which makes him all the more valuable.

Here are some highlights of Trevian Carson below:

During a recent appearance on the Legends Unplugged podcast hosted by former Bearcats Terry Nelson and Corie Blount, Cincinnati GM Corey Evans offered a very positive insight on the addition of Trevian Carson.

“Running the advanced analytics, Trevian rates out as our top rated addition from the portal analytically.” Evans said.

Evans also described Carson as “very low key, and laid back.” A trait that speaks to the maturity and composure Trevian will add to the team. Those qualities can be invaluable during high pressure moments, that define a teams success and season. I’ll link the podcast below, Trevian Carson is mentioned at 42:30

For those questioning whether Trevian Carson’s production will translate to a higher level, his performance against Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA tournament gives me complete faith in his ability. Carson finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, proving he can be an impact against elite competition.

He may be flying under the radar among the incoming Cincinnati Bearcat portal additions, but Trevian Carson’s versatility, experience and winning traits could make him one of the most important for this Bearcats team.
