This Past Week in Cincinnati Sports: October 5–11

It was another busy week across Cincinnati athletics, with the Bearcats picking up a conference victory on the soccer pitch, sweeping a local rival in the pool, and giving fans an early look at the men’s basketball team. Other programs continued their fall schedules, gaining valuable experience as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

From a much-needed football bye week to a promising start for swimming and diving, here’s a look at what happened across Cincinnati sports from October 5–11.

Cincinnati women’s soccer picked up a significant result with a 1-0 shutout victory over Utah, earning its first Big 12 win of the season.

Freshman forward Brooklynn Schomaker delivered the decisive moment in the 72nd minute, scoring her first career goal to give the Bearcats the lead. Sophomore defender Dru Dorsey set up the goal with an assist, helping Cincinnati secure a result it needed as conference play continued.

The Bearcats also delivered a strong defensive performance to protect the advantage. Junior goalkeeper Amber Brandon recorded four saves, keeping Utah off the scoreboard and securing the shutout.

Five Cincinnati players went the distance, each playing all 90 minutes: defenders senior Ally Gilbert, sophomore Lexi O’Shea and junior Anna Barber, along with midfielders senior Emma Gioffre and freshman Braelyn Even.

The victory gave the Bearcats a boost in conference play and offered a promising moment for a team looking to build momentum as the season progresses.

Cincinnati women’s volleyball faced a difficult Big 12 test at Fifth Third Arena, falling 3-1 to Iowa State.

The Bearcats found themselves in a competitive conference matchup, but Iowa State ultimately did enough in the later sets to leave Cincinnati searching for answers. The result highlighted the challenges that come with competing in a demanding Big 12 schedule, where teams must sustain their execution throughout an entire match.

Outside hitter senior Sydney Nolan provided an offensive presence, while middle blocker Lilian Entenmann helped Cincinnati at the net. Junior Andi Spies and freshman Lily Rolfes shared setting responsibilities as the Bearcats continued working through their rotation.

Although Cincinnati couldn’t come away with the win, the matchup offered another opportunity to evaluate the lineup and identify areas for improvement heading into the next stretch of conference play.

Cincinnati women’s tennis continued its fall schedule by competing in the ITA Fall Ohio Valley Regional Championships at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

The regional tournament gave the Bearcats an opportunity to test themselves against quality competition while continuing to develop their singles and doubles lineups ahead of the spring season.

Freshman Emme Bull provided one of the week’s highlights, earning a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky in a singles consolation match. Bull’s straight-set performance offered an encouraging result as she continues to gain experience at the collegiate level.

Upperclassmen Gabrielle Guenther and Milica Popovski also competed in the tournament, gaining valuable repetitions in singles and doubles.

With the spring championship season still ahead, the fall schedule gives Cincinnati a chance to evaluate its roster, build confidence before the stakes rise.

Cincinnati swimming and diving opened its season in impressive fashion, sweeping Northern Kentucky in a pair of home victories at the Keating Aquatic Center.

The women’s team secured a commanding 166-71 win, while the men’s squad followed with a convincing 159-88 victory. Both results gave Cincinnati a strong start to its head-to-head schedule and helped establish early momentum for the season.

All-American standout senior Joleigh Crye played a key role in the women’s performance, contributing in sprint breaststroke and relay events. Her presence helped power a strong team effort as Cincinnati took control of the meet.

The victories also marked an encouraging beginning for the program under head coach Joey Ferreri. With both teams opening the season on the right foot, the Bearcats will look to carry that momentum into their upcoming meets.

Cincinnati men’s golf faced a demanding stretch, wrapping up competition at the Cullan Brown Collegiate in Lexington before heading to Salt Lake City, Utah, for the Big 12 Match Play tournament.

The quick turnaround presented a challenge as the Bearcats moved from one event to another while continuing to face strong collegiate competition.

The fall schedule gives Cincinnati an important opportunity to evaluate its golfers in different formats and against quality opponents. Those rounds can help the coaching staff determine which players fit best into the team’s lineup as the season progresses.

With winter conditioning on the horizon, the Bearcats will look to use their remaining fall opportunities to improve consistency and prepare for the spring portion of their schedule.

Cincinnati men’s basketball gave fans an early glimpse of the upcoming season with a 79-68 exhibition victory over Ohio State at the CareSource Invitational.

The matchup brought the Bearcats and Buckeyes together in an unusual outdoor setting at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, providing a different atmosphere from the traditional indoor college basketball experience.

Cincinnati came away with an 11-point victory, offering fans an encouraging early look at the team before the regular season begins.

As with any exhibition, the final score tells only part of the story. The game gave the coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate rotations, examine how players perform together and identify areas that need attention before the games begin to count in the standings.

The Bearcats will now turn their attention toward the regular season, with plenty of work remaining before their next campaign gets underway.

Cincinnati football spent the week on its bye, giving the Bearcats a chance to rest, recover and prepare for the next stage of their Big 12 schedule.

The timing offers Cincinnati an opportunity to address areas for improvement while getting players physically ready for the challenges ahead.

The Bearcats now turn their attention to a road matchup against West Virginia in Morgantown on Saturday, October 17.

With conference play continuing to shape the season, Cincinnati will look to make the most of its extra preparation time before returning to the field against the Mountaineers.

The week brought a little bit of everything for Cincinnati athletics. Women’s soccer secured an important conference victory, swimming and diving swept Northern Kentucky, and men’s basketball gave fans an early reason for optimism with its exhibition win over Ohio State.

Women’s volleyball and tennis continued to navigate competitive fall schedules, while men’s golf took on a demanding stretch of tournament play. Football, meanwhile, used its bye week to prepare for a pivotal road test.

As October continues, the Bearcats will look to build on their successes, learn from their setbacks and keep pushing toward their goals across every sport.
