The Cincinnati Bearcats are set for their first major test of the 2026 season when Kansas State comes to Historic Nippert Stadium Saturday night.
Cincinnati enters the matchup at 3-0 after overcoming a 21-point deficit to defeat Miami (OH) 35-31, while Kansas State has also navigated its non-conference schedule without a loss. The Wildcats opened the season with dominant victories over Nicholls State and Washington State before taking down Tulane 31-20 last weekend.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN2, marking Cincinnati’s second Nippert at Night game of the season.
The Bearcats have historically thrived in the atmosphere. Since 2006, Cincinnati is 40-16 in home games played under the lights, and Saturday will mark the first time since 2023 that the Bearcats have hosted two Nippert at Night games in the same season.
But beyond the atmosphere, this matchup represents something more important.
With both teams entering at 3-0 and a 1-0 start to Big 12 play on the line, Saturday night will provide the first true measuring stick of the season for both programs.
A New Level of Competition
Both Cincinnati and Kansas State have taken care of business through the opening three weeks, but neither has faced a conference opponent yet.
That changes Saturday.
For Cincinnati, the game provides an early opportunity to protect home field and establish itself in the Big 12 standings. The Bearcats showed plenty of resilience against Miami (OH), but Kansas State presents a much different challenge on both sides of the football.
The Wildcats enter with an offense capable of creating explosive plays, while their defense has consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks.
If Cincinnati wants to leave Nippert Stadium with a win, it will likely need to play a controlled game, establish the running game and prevent Kansas State from dictating the pace.
The Battle in the Trenches
One of the most intriguing aspects of Saturday’s matchup will be the battle along the line of scrimmage.
Cincinnati entered the season with expectations that its offensive line could be one of the better units in the Big 12. Through three games, however, the results have been somewhat mixed.
The Bearcats have surrendered four sacks, which currently ranks ninth in the conference. Kansas State, meanwhile, has yet to allow a sack this season.
The contrast becomes even more noticeable when looking at the defensive side of the ball.
Kansas State currently leads the Big 12 with 11 sacks through three games, while Cincinnati has recorded 7.
That creates an obvious challenge for the Bearcats.
Can Cincinnati keep quarterback JC French IV clean long enough to make plays downfield? And can the Bearcats create enough running room to keep Kansas State’s defense from constantly attacking the quarterback?
Those questions could go a long way toward determining how Saturday night unfolds.
Avery Johnson Presents a Major Challenge
If there is one player Cincinnati’s defense will have to account for virtually every snap, it’s Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson.
The senior dual-threat quarterback has quickly established himself as the centerpiece of the Wildcats’ offense and enters Saturday coming off one of his best performances of the season.
Against Tulane, Johnson rushed for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 12 carries. He also completed 75 percent of his passes for 227 yards.
Through three games, Johnson has thrown for 618 yards and six touchdowns while adding 253 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
His rushing efficiency has been particularly impressive. Johnson is averaging 10.5 yards per carry, the highest mark among quarterbacks in the nation. Navy quarterback Braxton Woodson currently ranks second at 8.5 yards per carry.
That combination of passing ability and explosive rushing makes Johnson particularly difficult to contain.
Cincinnati cannot afford to allow Johnson to consistently extend plays with his legs or turn designed runs into explosive gains. If the Bearcats can keep him contained and force Kansas State to operate in predictable situations, they can give themselves a chance to slow down the Wildcats’ offense.
Another Young Weapon in the Backfield
Johnson isn’t the only Kansas State player Cincinnati will have to worry about in the running game.
Freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr. has immediately carved out a significant role in the Wildcats’ offense.
Fields has rushed for 224 yards on 37 carries through the first three games, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. His explosiveness gives Kansas State another way to attack defenses and prevents opponents from simply selling out to stop Johnson.
The Bearcats will need disciplined run fits from the entire defense if they want to keep Kansas State from consistently moving the chains on the ground.
JaVonnie Gibson Leads the Way for Cincinnati
While Kansas State has plenty of offensive firepower, Cincinnati has its own playmaker capable of changing a game.
Wide receiver JaVonnie Gibson has been one of the Bearcats’ most productive players through the first three weeks of the season.
The senior has caught 16 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, establishing himself as French’s primary target.
At 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, Gibson gives Cincinnati a physical presence on the outside and has quickly become one of the team’s most dangerous options in the passing game, particularly when the Bearcats need a big play or a target in the red zone.
His 3 receiving touchdowns currently have him tied for 15th nationally.
Against a Kansas State defense that has generated significant pressure this season, Gibson’s ability to win his matchups could be critical. If Cincinnati can give French enough time to find him downfield, the Bearcats could have opportunities to generate explosive plays against the Wildcats.
Antwan Peek Jr. Anchors the Defense
On the defensive side of the ball, Cincinnati will look to senior outside linebacker Antwan Peek Jr. to help set the tone.
Peek leads the Bearcats with 23 total tackles through three games and has been one of the most active players on the defensive side of the football.
His ability to create pressure from the edge will be especially important against Johnson.
Cincinnati doesn’t necessarily need to completely shut down Kansas State’s quarterback, but it will need to make his job uncomfortable. Generating pressure without consistently sacrificing contain could be one of the biggest challenges for the Bearcats’ defense.
What Cincinnati Needs to Do
The formula for Cincinnati is relatively straightforward, even if executing it will be anything but easy.
The Bearcats need to establish the ground game, control the clock and keep Kansas State’s offense from turning the game into a track meet.
Keeping the game relatively low-scoring would also benefit Cincinnati. The more possessions Kansas State gets, the more opportunities Johnson and the Wildcats’ explosive offense have to make plays.
Cincinnati also needs to protect French.
The Bearcats cannot afford to consistently put themselves in obvious passing situations against a Kansas State defense that has already recorded 11 sacks. If Cincinnati can stay ahead of the chains and maintain balance offensively, it can limit the Wildcats’ ability to unleash their pass rush.
Defensively, containing Johnson is priority No. 1.
The Bearcats will need disciplined tackling, strong gap integrity and consistent pressure while maintaining their assignments against one of the country’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks.
A Statement Opportunity at Nippert
Both teams arrive undefeated, but only one will leave with a 1-0 conference record.
For Cincinnati, it’s a chance to turn an unbeaten start into something more meaningful and show how the Bearcats stack up against one of the conference’s established programs.
There may not be a better setting for that opportunity than Nippert at Night.
The lights will be on, the stadium will be loud and the Big 12 season will officially begin.
Now, Cincinnati gets its first real test.
