After representing Madagascar in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers this summer, Northern Kentucky forward Donovan Rakotonanahary returns to Highland Heights with added experience and confidence heading into the 2026-27 season.
The 6’6″ redshirt sophomore is looking to build on that momentum and help the Norse compete for a championship.
Before the season gets underway, I caught up with Rakotonanahary to learn more about his journey, his goals, and a few of his favorite things away from the court!
Why NKU?
When asked what initially stood out about Northern Kentucky, Rakotonanahary pointed to the program’s belief in player development.
“What stuck out to me about NKU was their ability to recognize the potential in a player and the environment they’ve created. It felt like a place where I could continue to grow and develop.”
That approach has shown up throughout his time with the Norse. He came in as a developmental prospect with plenty of upside, and since then he’s kept working to round out his game and become a more complete player.

“Michael Jordan”
Do you have a favorite local food spot near campus?
“My favorite local food spot near campus is Cane’s.”
Favorite pre-game song to get locked in?
“My favorite pregame song to get locked in is, “Make Money” by Basta Lion.”
What Should The Fans Know?
If there’s one thing Rakotonanahary wants NKU fans to know, it’s what they’ll get every time he steps on the floor.
“One thing I want every Norse fan to know about me is how hard I play. Every time I step on the court, I’m going to compete and give everything I have.”
That mindset has helped define Rakotonanahary’s development since arriving at NKU. Whether it’s battling for rebounds, defending multiple positions, or making hustle plays that don’t always show up in the box score, his effort and competitiveness have become key components of his game. As he continues to gain experience and confidence, those qualities should make him an important piece of the Norse rotation this season.
The Goal
As for his biggest goal entering the upcoming season, Rakotonanahary didn’t hesitate.
“One specific goal I’ve set for myself this upcoming season is to win the Horizon League Championship.”
It’s an ambitious goal, but one that reflects the standard this year’s Norse squad is aiming to set.
Looking Ahead
Rakotonanahary’s recent performance during the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers showcased the growth of his offensive game while providing valuable experience against elite international competition. Representing Madagascar on the road to the World Cup was a significant step in his development and should only help boost his progress heading into the college season.
As he returns for his redshirt sophomore campaign, there is plenty of reason for optimism. Rakotonanahary arrived at NKU as an intriguing long-term prospect, and his game continues to mature. His length, versatility, and ability to impact multiple areas of the game make him an important piece of the Norse rotation.
If his growth over the past year is any indication, Norse fans may witness Rakotonanahary bloom into of one of NKU’s most versatile players this season.
