Jerrod Calhoun and his staff continue to make recruiting a major priority, and one of the latest names expected on campus is four-star point guard Payton Jones, who is scheduled to take an official visit to Cincinnati on June 21.
The Beaumont, Texas native is regarded as one of the top floor generals in the 2027 class, currently ranked as the No. 17 point guard in the country. Jones plays at Beaumont United and has quickly become one of the more sought after guards, gaining steady traction in his recruitment.
What immediately stands out when watching Jones is his physicality. He plays with an edge that coaches love, consistently attacking defenders downhill and embracing contact. Whether he’s getting all the way to the rim or forcing his way to the free throw line, Jones puts constant pressure on opposing defenses. His tenacity is very apparent on film, and my personal favorite trait he possesses.
Jones has developed into a true three-level scorer, capable of finishing through contact, pulling up in the midrange, and knocking down shots from beyond the arc. His ability to score in a variety of ways makes him difficult to game plan against.
From the tape and highlights I’ve been able to find, it’s evident Jones is comfortable operating in tight spaces and rarely looks rattled when defenses collapse on him. He thrives in traffic, keeps defenders on his hip, and has the strength to finish plays that many guards his age can struggle with.
The defensive end may be where his competitive nature shines brightest. Jones plays with aggression, applying pressure on the ball and competing on every possession. His toughness and willingness to defend fit the deep roots of what it means to be a Cincinnati Bearcat.
His offer sheet already includes notable programs such as Cincinnati, LSU, Missouri, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Houston, and several others.
It’s worth noting with this recruitment Jones proximity to Houston. Beaumont sits less than an hour and a half from the Cougars campus, giving Kelvin Sampson and his staff a home court advantage. Even so, Cincinnati has positioned itself firmly in the conversation and will have an opportunity to make a strong impression when Jones arrives on campus this weekend.
As Calhoun continues to target high level talent across the country, Jones represents another example of the caliber of player Cincinnati is pursuing. Getting him to campus is an important step in what could become one of the more intriguing Bearcat recruitments to follow in the 2027 cycle.
