Welcome into the Week 10 iteration of the SEC power rankings! The initial CFP rankings came out Tuesday, and as expected, the SEC dominates the field. If the season would have ended after week 9, they would have had 5 out of 11 possible bids. Tennessee and LSU are barely on the outside looking in as well. In all, there are 10 teams represented in the CFP top 25 this week, clearly the most out of any conference.
- 2. Georgia
- 5. Alabama
- 6. Kentucky
- 7. Texas
- 10. Ole Miss
Editorial note: This week’s rankings are from Hunter and are going to feature a look ahead at schedules to end the year for each of the teams!
1 Georgia
After blowing out Florida Saturday, the Bulldogs have cemented themselves as the top dogs in the SEC. They travel to Oxford to battle Ole Miss this weekend before hosting Missouri, traveling to South Carolina and then the annual rivalry matchup with Georgia Tech to close they year. Projection: 10-2.
2 Kentucky
Remaining: @ Tennessee, vs. Florida, @ Missouri, vs. Louisville. If the Wildcats go 4-0, a bye in the CFP is likely. However, there’s also a case where they go 0-4 and miss completely. Stein and co. likely get it done and break into the CFP. Projection: 10-2.
3 Ole Miss
The Rebels absolutely blew the doors off of Auburn Saturday. Their 45-15 victory kept them right at 3. Their reward, however, is Georgia coming to town. The question will become: Is a 3 loss Ole Miss team worthy of the CFP? Their best wins in that scenario would be Louisville, LSU and Missouri. They close the year @ Oklahoma, vs. Wofford, and vs. Mississippi State. Projection: 9-3.
4 Alabama
The Crimson Tide desperately needed a break after the Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas A&M games. However, off the bye, they go to Baton Rouge. They close the year with an extremely manageable schedule @ Vanderbilt, vs. Chattanooga, and the Iron Bowl at home. Projection: 10-2.
5 Texas
The quarterback issues seem to have improved enough to where they aren’t a glaring issue, and with the talent Texas has, that’s good enough. Their margin for error, however, is gone. They travel to Missouri and LSU before hosting Arkansas and then traveling to A&M. Much like Ole Miss, is this a 3 loss CFP team? Their best wins would be Tennessee, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and one of LSU or Missouri in that scenario. Projection: 9-3.
6 LSU
The Tigers are first in line of the grouping just outside looking in in the CFP right now. However, their road is brutal. The next 3 weeks see them playing Alabama and Texas at home before traveling to Neyland Stadium and then closing the year with Arkansas. Their best win to-date is Mississippi State. If they can pick off two of Texas, Alabama and Tennessee, is that enough? Another 9-3 projection.
7 Tennessee
The Vols were an extremely intriguing team, and judging by the 13th ranking in the initial CFP release, their loss to South Carolina Saturday knocked them out of the CFP for the moment. The good news, however, for the Volunteers is they host Kentucky and LSU while they have to travel to A&M and Vanderbilt. While not an easy schedule, Neyland Stadium gives them a great advantage. Projection: 9-3.
8 Missouri
The Tigers rolled past Arkkansas, as expected. Now, however, they close the year with a brutal stretch. They host Texas before travling to Georgia and then retuning home to host Kentucky and Oklahoma to close they year. Projection: 8-4.
9 Florida
The Gators have been an extremely fun watch at times this year, but absolutely brutal to watch other times. The win over Texas is what has them ranked right now, and they have an extremely favorable schedule down the stretch. They host Oklahoma Saturday, travel to Kentucky, host Vanderbilt and close by traveling to Florida State. Three of those games are extremely winnable, while Kentucky will be a huge test. Projection: 8-4.
10 South Carolina
This team has had a remarkable turnaround since the three losses in a row culminating with Kentucky’s two point conversion in overtime. Since that moment, South Carolina has beaten Florida, Tennessee and Oklahoma. While they likely cannot get to the CFP, an 8 win season after starting 2-3 feels like a win. To get to that number they must win 3 of Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, at Clemson. I think they’ll get it done.
11 Auburn
Coming off of back to back blowout losses, Auburn hosts Arkansas looking to get back on track. They then travel to Mississippi State, host Samford and then travel to Alabama for the Iron Bowl. If they goal is bowl eligibility, the Tigers need to win their two home matchups. Projection: 6-6.
12 Texas A&M
Coming off the bye, A&M travels to South Carolina before hosting Tennessee, traveling to Oklahoma and hosting Texas to close the year. With what this team has shown this year, I’m not sure I see a win on this schedule. Projection: 5-7.
13 Oklahoma
It’s entirely possible Oklahoma doesn’t win another game this year. They’re at florida this weekend before hosting Ole Miss and Texas A&M and closing with Missouri. The 4-4 Sooners need two more wins to get bowl eligible, and I just don’t see it. Projection: 5-7
14 Mississippi State
The Bulldogs were dominated by Texas, and have now lost 4 in a row. Kamario Taylor will likely be back next year, and all eyes are pointed towards just getting this season over and moving forward. However, their schedule is considerably lighter with Vanderbilt, Auburn and Tennessee Tech all at home before closing with Ole Miss in Oxford. The Bulldogs should be able to get bowl eligible this year. Projection: 6-6
15 Arkansas
The Razorbacks are now 3-5 on the year, and if it wasn’t for the Vanderbilt win, they’d be winless in the SEC. They close with Auburn, South Carolina, Texas, and LSU. Projection: 3-9.
16 Vanderbilt
The Commodores are winless in the SEC, and I don’t see that changing this season. They travel to Mississippi state, host Alabama, travel to Florida and host Tennessee to close the year. Projection: 3-9.
