Week 9 College Football Playoff Updates: G6 Bid Contenders & Bracket

The postseason is nearing, after another week of upsets the College Football Playoff field underwent numerous changes. This week, there is a new No. 1 seed, multiple new teams in the field and a mix-up in the order of our Group of 6 contenders.

No. 1 Miami (7-0): The Hurricanes jumped up to the top spot after BYU’s loss to UCF. This weekend, they travel to North Carolina in the hopes of extending their unbeaten season.

No. 2 Ohio State (6-1): The Buckeyes moved up to the second overall spot on a bye week, meaning they won the week. Saturday, they travel to USC with a brand new quarterback. This game will define the rest of their season.

No. 3 Georgia (6-1): The Bulldogs were on bye this weekend, and they shifted up to the third spot in the process. This weekend, they host No. 17 ranked Florida. This is a game they should win, but it won’t be easy.

No. 4 Utah (7-0): The Utes remain undefeated after their win over No. 18 ranked Houston this past weekend, which moved them all the way up to the fourth spot. This weekend, they travel to Cincinnati, who is coming off of a big win against Texas Tech.

No. 5 Indiana (7-1): The Hoosiers dropped a spot after narrowly escaping Michigan last weekend. Saturday, they host Minnesota and College Gameday will be in attendance.

No. 6 BYU (6-1): The Cougars dropped all the way from the top spot to the sixth after their loss to UCF. This weekend, they will look to bounce back as they host Arizona State.

No. 7 UCLA (7-0): The Bruins are one of the three undefeated remaining teams in College Football after their win against Michigan State. They look to continue their success Saturday when they host Nevada.

No. 8 Notre Dame (6-1): The Fighting Irish were on bye this weekend, but they dropped a spot. This weekend, they travel to the Navy for what should be a win.

No. 9 Kentucky (7-1): The Wildcats are back in the field after their win over Vanderbilt this past weekend. They are on bye this week, but travel to No. 16 ranked Tennessee Nov. 7 for a huge one.

No. 10 Alabama (6-2): The Crimson Tide got back on track with a 31-20 win over Texas A&M last weekend. They are also on bye this week before heading into Death Valley to face LSU Nov. 7 in what will be a massive game for both sides.

No. 11 Texas (5-2): The Longhorns are back in the field after a 34-27 win over No. 12 ranked Ole Miss. This weekend, they host Mississippi State, who will be without Kamario Taylor.

No. 12 Boise State (6-1): The Broncos remain the favorite for the G6 bid, but the gap tightens. Read more about the G6 outlook below.

Other Teams Considered: Ole Miss, LSU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Arizona, Tennessee

G6 Contenders

Boise State (Pac-12)

The Broncos are still the favorite for the G6 bid, but they are slowly losing breathing room. They are now 6-1 on the year, with a close loss to Oregon, and wins over Memphis, South Dakota, Western Michigan, Utah State, Fresno State and Washington State. The Broncos remain in the AP Poll this week, now up to a tie for 20th. Their toughest remaining Pac-12 match-ups are against Oregon State, San Diego State and Texas State. The first of those three matchups comes Saturday as they host Texas State.

New Mexico (Mountain West)

The Lobos continue to surge up the G6 ranks, as they are now 6-1 through eight weeks. They have a close loss to Oklahoma, and wins over Central Michigan, Mercyhurst, New Mexico State, UTEP, Hawaii and North Dakota State. The Lobos’ main competition in the Mountain West consists of NDSU, Wyoming, UNLV, Air Force, San Jose State and Nevada. New Mexico has already played NDSU, and will play each of these teams at some point this year. Its next task at hand is Saturday as they travel to San Jose State.

UTSA (American)

The Roadrunners continue to roll through the season, as they are now 7-1. Their lone loss is to Texas; their wins are over Rio Grande Valley, Texas State, Colorado State, Rice, South Florida, Navy and Tulane. They currently lead the American and look to continue that through the rest of the year. However, the closing bit of their schedule is tough. They match up against FAU, North Texas and UAB, who are all contenders in the AAC.

Oregon State (Pac-12)

Despite an 0-2 start to the year consisting of losses to Houston and Texas Tech, the Beavers are surging up the rankings. They have won five straight, with those wins consisting of: Montana, UTEP, Colorado State, San Diego State and Washington State. The Beavers remain a bit of a long-shot, but they have an advantage over these other teams. On Nov. 14, the Beavers get to travel to Boise and take a shot at the current G6 leaders, the Boise State Broncos. Winning this game would turn the G6 race upside down. Before that, they must get through another Pac-12 contender in Fresno State Saturday.

James Madison (Sun Belt)

The Dukes are now 7-1 on the season after losing to App State in overtime Thursday. Their CFP odds have dropped significantly, as they are the only team out of our contenders that have lost to a fellow G6 team. Their wins are over Liberty, Wagner, San Diego State, Old Dominion, Marshall, Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Meaning, they don’t have a marquee win to make up for that loss. Despite that, all they can do is keep winning games and hope for some mistakes from other contenders. That journey starts Thursday night as they host Troy.
