Week 7 Updates: Bracketology & G6 Breakdown

Week 6 brought down chaos upon the College Football world, shaking up the playoff projections significantly. To start, we have a new No. 1 overall seed. Another team makes their first appearance in the bracket, and our G6 contender list experiences a shakeup. Catch up on it all below!

1. Georgia (6-0): The Bulldogs jumped up to the No. 1 spot after their big win over Alabama and a Texas loss. This week, they host Auburn in what should be an easy win.

2. Notre Dame (5-0): The Fighting Irish jumped up to No. 2 with three middle-tier power conference wins. Their first major test is this Saturday, as they travel to Provo to face off with BYU.

3. Miami (5-0): The Hurricanes move up to No. 3 with a solid win over Wake Forest. They should win their next three games, putting themselves at 8-0 before they head to South Bend to face off with Notre Dame.

4. Texas (4-1): The Longhorns dropped from their top spot after a loss to Oklahoma this past Saturday. Despite the drop, they are still comfortably in the field and have plenty of big opportunities to move back up. This weekend, they host the Florida Gators.

5. Ohio State (5-1): The Buckeyes are at No. 5 for the second week in a row. Saturday will prove as a massive test for the Buckeyes when they face off with the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington.

6. Indiana (6-0): The Hoosiers picked up an impressive come-from-behind road win Saturday, beating Nebraska. As said above, Saturday is a massive test for Indiana as well.

7. Alabama (5-1): The Crimson Tide have one of the best resumes in the country. However, a loss to Georgia this past Saturday is keeping them from the top. This weekend, they have an opportunity to bolster that resume when they travel to Knoxville for a ranked duel with Tennessee.

8. BYU (5-0): The Cougars have decent wins over Arizona, TCU and Iowa State. Saturday, they host Notre Dame in what is a game with massive playoff implications.

9. Ole Miss (4-1): The Rebels strong resume is keeping them in the field. They have wins over Louisville and LSU through four games. Looking ahead, they have massive opportunities against Texas (Oct. 24) and Georgia (Nov. 7).

10. Texas Tech (5-0): The Red Raiders have a solid win over the Houston Cougars. Their schedule is relatively easy the rest of the way and if they handle business; they will go 12-0.

11. UCLA (5-0): The Bruins are the newest addition to the playoff field, with solid wins over California, Purdue, and Oregon. However, starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava has been ruled out indefinitely. Saturday’s matchup with Wisconsin will tell us how the Bruins can fare without their leader.

12. Boise State (5-1): The Broncos are still the favorite for the G6 spot. Read more about their outlook below.

Other Considered Teams: Utah, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee

G6 Contenders

Boise State (Pac-12)

The Broncos are the current favorite for the G6 bid. They are now 4-1 on the year, with a close loss to Oregon, and wins over Memphis, South Dakota, Western Michigan, Utah State and Fresno State. The Broncos remain in the AP Poll this week, finding themselves ranked at 23. Now, their focus shifts to Pac-12 play. Their toughest remaining match-ups are against Oregon State and Colorado State. This weekend, the Broncos are on bye.

James Madison (Sun Belt)

The Dukes are 6-0 to start this season, beating Liberty, Wagner, San Diego State, Old Dominion, Marshall and Georgia Southern. In the Sun Belt, there are plenty of contenders for the title. The main ones are JMU, App State, Troy, Louisiana and Georgia State. The Dukes play nearly all of these teams. This weekend, they host Georgia State in a big one. Outside of Georgia State, when it comes to contenders, they travel to App State and host Troy later on. All JMU can do is continue to win games and hope Boise slips up.

New Mexico (Mountain West)

The Lobos are 4-1 through six weeks, with a close loss to Oklahoma, and dominant wins over: Central Michigan, Mercyhurst, New Mexico State, and UTEP. Looking ahead, the Lobos’ main competition in the Mountain West consists of NDSU, UNLV, Air Force and San Jose State. New Mexico plays each of these teams at some point this year, starting with NDSU Oct. 24. If they can take down NDSU, they are in a great spot. However, before that they must get past Hawai’i Saturday. That shouldn’t be an issue as the Rainbow Warriors are 1-5.

Memphis (American)

The Tigers sit at 5-1 through six games, with a loss to Boise State. Their wins are against UNLV, Arkansas State, UT Martin, Charlotte and UAB. At the moment, it’s a bit of a long-shot for the Tigers, but the race for the AAC is wide open. The biggest games on their schedule are South Florida, Tulane, Army and Navy. The first opponent out of the group is Tulane this Friday. Sansom Sports Media will keep our eyes peeled on that one.

Oregon State (Pac-12)

Despite an 0-2 start to the year, consisting of losses to Houston and Texas Tech, the Beavers are surging. They have won four straight, with those wins consisting of: Montana, UTEP, Colorado State and San Diego State. The Beavers are also a bit of a long-shot, but they have an advantage over other teams. On Nov. 14, the Beavers get to travel to Boise and take a shot at the current G6 leaders, the Boise State Broncos. Winning this game could turn the G6 race upside down. Before that, they must get through another Pac-12 contender in Fresno State. However, before they get ahead of themselves, they must take care of Washington State this weekend.
