Heisman Hopefuls: Week 7 Heisman Trophy Watch

Welcome to the week 7 Heisman Trophy watch! This award is in Jeremiah Smith’s hands and it’s up to him to not give it away. However, there are multiple quarterbacks making a push toward the top. Plus, we have a new addition by way of Jesse Legree and Gio Lopez!

Jeremiah Smith

Smith has 48 receptions, 916 yards, and 11 touchdowns this year. This weekend against Indiana will be another huge test for Smith and the Buckeyes.

Darian Mensah

Mensah has thrown for 1,438 yards, 15 touchdowns, and perhaps most importantly, zero interceptions this season. He has rushed 12 times for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns. The 5-0 Hurricanes host Florida State this weekend after their bye.

Gunner Stockton

Stockton has thrown for 1,298 yards, 14 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and he has rushed 26 times for 134 yards and 1 touchdown. The Bulldogs are 6-0 on the year after taking down Alabama. They now turn their attention to Auburn on Saturday.

CJ Carr

The biggest knock on Carr right now is that Notre Dame is yet to really play anyone of note. That changes this weekend when they head to Provo. Carr has 1,378 yards, 16 touchdowns and 1 interception. He has rushed 17 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns this year as well.

Julian Sayin

Ohio State’s star quarterback has 1,772 yards, 17 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, he’s added 13 carries for -8 yards and no touchdowns this season. This weekend, things continue to get challenging for the Buckeyes as they face off with Indiana.

Trinidad Chambliss

Chambliss didn’t have to do much this weekend, as Ole Miss took their frustrations out on Vanderbilt, winning 52-17. Chambliss is up to 1,435 yards, 11 touchdowns, 4 interceptions and has added 32 carries for 131 yards and 5 touchdowns. This weekend, they get a de facto CFP elimination game against Missouri.

Keelon Russell

Russell took his first loss as a college quarterback this weekend at home against Georgia. His performance could’ve been better, but he didn’t turn the ball over, and managed to keep his team in the game. However, that’s not what you want out of a Heisman hopeful. He’s up to 1,599 yards, 12 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on the season. His 46 carries for 225 yards and four touchdowns help push him close to 2,000 yards on the season.

Kamario Taylor

Taylor isn’t healthy, but has thrown for 1,450 yards, 17 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He’s added 43 carries, 159 yards and 1 touchdown this season. He needs to get healthy, but once he does so, he has the production and the schedule to become a Heisman hopeful.

Jesse Legree

38 receptions, 932 yards, 12 touchdowns. That’s what got him on the list. Before you say “he’s a group of 6 player,” he’s put up 136 yards and 1 TD against Houston, and 240 yards for 2 touchdowns against Texas Tech. Legree continues to shine week in and week out, putting up no less than 100 yards in any game this year.

Gio Lopez

Lopez has led the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a great start this year at 5-1. He’s up to 1,680 yards, 13 touchdowns, 1 interception through the air. He has added 56 carries for 202 yards and 6 touchdowns this season. Wake Forest has become the second best team in the ACC, mainly because Lopez has led this team like a star. That doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

While we have a clear frontrunner, things aren’t over yet. The Heisman Trophy is a quarterback award traditionally, and there are multiple quarterbacks fighting for a spot in New York in December.
