Cincinnati Overwhelmed in Tucson as Arizona Ends Bearcats’ Perfect Start

The Cincinnati Bearcats finally met their match in the desert.

Arizona controlled the game from the opening kickoff Saturday night at Casino Del Sol Stadium, handing Cincinnati its first loss of the season with a 34-7 victory in Tucson.

After opening the season 4-0 and entering the night with plenty of momentum, Cincinnati struggled to find its rhythm against an Arizona team that consistently won the battle at the line of scrimmage. The Wildcats finished with 522 total yards compared to 227 for the Bearcats and controlled the clock for more than 35 minutes.

The loss drops Cincinnati to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 play.

The biggest difference came on the ground.

Cincinnati entered the matchup with the Big 12’s second-ranked rushing attack, but Arizona held the Bearcats to just 74 rushing yards on 28 attempts. The Wildcats, meanwhile, piled up 238 yards on 41 carries.

Antwan Roberts provided the game’s biggest rushing play, breaking loose for a 58-yard run on his way to 87 yards on just 5 carries. Quincy Craig added 77 yards on 7 attempts, while Kedrick Reescano handled much of Arizona’s workload with 21 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Arizona’s ability to consistently create movement up front allowed the Wildcats to stay ahead of the chains and put pressure on Cincinnati throughout the night.

The Wildcats finished with 30 first downs to Cincinnati’s 12 and averaged 6.7 yards per play.

Arizona also had to overcome adversity of its own.

The Wildcats lost three starting wide receivers. Gio Richardson, Chris Hunter and Tre Spivey III — to injuries during the first half. Rather than allowing those injuries to derail the offense, quarterback Noah Fifita continued to make plays with the targets available to him.

Fifita completed 25 of 37 passes for 284 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also added 17 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Tyler Powell caught 5 passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Brandon Phelps added 2 receptions for 36 yards and another score. Isaiah Mizell led Arizona with 67 receiving yards on 4 catches.

Even after losing several key pieces, Arizona continued to find ways to move the football.

For Cincinnati, the night never developed into the type of offensive performance the Bearcats had produced during their undefeated start.

JC French IV completed 16 of 29 passes for 153 yards without a touchdown or interception. He also carried the ball 9 times for 29 yards and Cincinnati’s lone touchdown.

Gi’Bran Payne finished with 24 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Cole Tabb added 19 yards on six attempts and contributed four catches for 40 yards.

Isaiah Johnson provided Cincinnati’s most productive receiving performance, hauling in 6 passes for 60 yards.

The Bearcats also had several opportunities that could have changed the game’s momentum, but they couldn’t capitalize.

Cincinnati missed a 53-yard field goal, turning the ball over on downs at Arizona’s 2-yard line and lost another potential momentum swing when a rare end-zone batting penalty erased a forced fumble.

Those missed opportunities became increasingly costly as Arizona continued to extend its lead.

Arizona eventually built a 34-0 advantage, but Cincinnati continued to fight until the final minutes.

With 1:56 remaining, French found the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run, giving the Bearcats their only points of the night.

It wasn’t the offensive performance Cincinnati wanted, but the late touchdown kept the Bearcats from being shut out on the road and gave the team something to carry into the upcoming bye week.

Saturday’s result certainly wasn’t what Cincinnati wanted when traveling to Tucson, but the Bearcats still sit at 4-1 with the majority of their season ahead of them.

The timing of the bye week could be valuable.

Cincinnati won’t play Saturday, giving the team an opportunity to regroup, get healthy and evaluate what went wrong against Arizona before returning to Big 12 play.

The Bearcats will return to action Saturday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Morgantown to face the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium. Kickoff time and television information have not yet been announced.

Arizona handed Cincinnati its first loss of the season in convincing fashion. Now, the Bearcats will have two weeks to respond.
