This week’s Norse Athletics Slate was highlighted by continued success for the Norse Volleyball team, another individual cross country victory, and a dominant performance from the Men’s Soccer team!
Player of the Week: Abby Pickard – volleyball. 69 assists in 2 games.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team went 2-0 against Miami (OH) this weekend, winning both matchups 3 sets to 0. Setter Abby Pickard continues to be a model of consistency for the Norse this year, posting 35 and then 34 assists in the two games this weekend. The Norse had 79 total assists in the two games.
The Volleyball team is home Friday night at 6 p.m. to take on the Milwaukee Panthers. They will play Saturday at 2 p.m. in Highland Heights as well.
Cross Country
The Norse women’s cross country teams won the Crimson Pride Invite this weekend, led by Grace Biddle, who won the event outright by 45 seconds. This is her second individual victory this year. Sami Govey (4th), and Emily Foley (5th) round out the top 3 for the Norse.
The Norse men’s cross country team finished 3rd out of 5 teams at the event. Brady Messer finished 17th, while Noah Towne (24th) and Gregory Beard (27th) rounded the Norse competition out.
The next meet is on Oct. 3, when NKU heads to Louisville to participate in the Louisville Classic.
Soccer
The Norse women’s soccer team fell at home Saturday vs. Youngstown State with a final score of 2-1. Megan Molner opened the scoring quickly off of an assist from Emma Gianino/Natalie Newman in the sixth minute. However, an Olimpico from Kate Makkas tied things up in the 17th minute before Kamryn Rosa netted the Penguin game winner in the 77th minute. The women are in DeKalb, Illinois for a matchup with Northern Illinois Thursday at 2 p.m. and then in Indianapolis vs. IU Indy at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The men’s soccer team routed the IU Indy Jaguars in Indianapolis on Saturday to the tune of a 5-1 final score. Ibrahim Piracha found the back of the net twice (13th and 19th minute). Bennett Gerak scored in the 19th minute, a goal was attributed to the norse “team” in the 37th minute, and Michael Luechauer netted the 5th in the 43rd minute. Henry Berry for IU Indy scored in the 81′, preventing a Norse clean sheet. The men will be in Dayton Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for a matchup with the Flyers.
Golf
The men’s and women’s golf teams were both in action Monday and Tuesday this week.
The women finished seventh out of 14 teams in Yorktown, Indiana at the Brittany Kelly Classic. Eva Maley finished 12th overall and led the Norse. She finished +6 overall. Cammy Reed was +16, while Ryliann Bednar was third for the Norse at +21. Their next time on the course will be the 28/29th of September for the NKU Fall Invitational at Belterra Golf Club.
The men finished 13th out of 14 teams in Huntington, West Virginia in the Joe Feaganes Invitational. Michael Long finished T-13 overall after starting -2 in the opening round, he ended at -3, which was 8 strokes better than 2nd place Norse Benjamin Carter. They will be back on the course this weekend in Muncie at the Ball State Invitational.
Tennis
The women’s tennis team hosted their fall invitational this weekend, picking up 12 total victories over two days. They took six singles and six doubles matches. Aaditi Bhat picked up 2 singles wins, joined by Adriana Moreno, Haley Slay, and Cassia Adamowsky. The pair victories belong to Zakic-Moreno, Cardoso-Slay, Gneidia-Moreno, Van Der Reit-Bhat, Bhat-Adamowski, and Van Der-Steenhuis.
Triathlon
The women’s triathlon team was in Beaver Falls, PA, where they finished 10th out of 13 teams. Charlotte Cunningham led the way for the Norse, finishing 49th overall. No other Norse were in the top 75. Their next meet is Oct. 17 in Lake Lanier, Georgia.
The men’s triathlon team will be in Urbana-Champaign, IL for the Tri the Illini event on Sept. 27.
Baseball
NKU opened their fall campaign on Tuesday, playing Thomas More. They will take on Frontier Community College Tuesday at 1:00. No box score is available for the game.
Softball
The softball team opened their fall campaign on Saturday with a doubleheader vs. Dayton. They play two games next Saturday at 11:00 (Thomas More), and 4:00 (Wilmington (OH)). Both are at NKU. No box score is available for the game.
