Another week gone, and now we’re moving into our Week 3 college football hot seat watch! This week marks the first time this season we’re projecting a head coach to be in a lame-duck year. Additionally, with recent AD changes, some timelines are moving up, while off-field drama may be too much for other coaches to overcome. Here is where teams stand heading into Week 3.
Greg Schiano
This is officially a lame duck year. It’s a matter of when, not if at this point.
Mike Norvell
Somehow, the worst thing for Norvell this week was not having a game. This week, Florida State fired athletic director Michael Alford, with a new leader, coaching security is non-existent. Norvell was on shaky ground before the change. The Seminoles have a huge opportunity this weekend vs. Alabama. However, if things go as expected in Tuscaloosa, Norvell’s $50M buyout becomes something boosters will likely start funding and pushing for change.
Luke Fickell
Dominating Western Illinois is better than the alternative, however, it’s not a result that is going to move the a needle. They get Eastern Michigan this weekend before traveling to Happy Valley on 9/26.
Bill O’Brien
O’Brien stays down on this list for now because he managed to beat Schiano and Rutgers this weekend. He still faces a significantly uphill battle to keep his job this year.
Bill Belichick
2-0 on the field means that the on-field things are going well. However, as discussed last week, his off-field issues will catch up with him eventually. I believe that’s what eventually does him in.
Dan Lanning
Would Oregon actually fire Lanning? I highly doubt it. However, Oregon is most likely not going to move on this season unless things go way off the rails. The Ducks have taken a step back already this year, and things won’t get easier. Anything short of a playoff appearance will make the decision makers in Eugene at least consider a move.
Butch Jones
The Arkansas State Red Wolves dominated West Georgia this weekend after getting beat by Memphis in the opener. Butch and co. get TCU and then Kennesaw State the next couple of weeks before turning to Sun Belt Play on 10/3. If they go anything less than 1-1 in their next 2, things are going to really start to heat up for Jones.
