Big Blue Nation has been waiting for this one.
After opening the Will Stein era with a 45-13 victory over FCS No. 7 Youngstown State, Kentucky gets its first major test Saturday when Alabama comes to Kroger Field.
The Wildcats enter the Kentucky vs. Alabama matchup at 1-0, while Alabama is also 1-0 after defeating East Carolina 48-10.
Throughout the week on Heavy Pour Sports and the All UK Ball – Big Blue Ball show, one of the biggest questions has been whether Kentucky can make Alabama uncomfortable enough to turn this into a fourth-quarter game.
I believe it can.
Keelon Russell Faces His First Road Test
Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell is one of the biggest storylines entering Saturday.
Russell is making his fourth career appearance, second start, first conference game and first road game.Last season, Austin Simmons came into Kroger Field in Week 2 for his first road start and did not have a strong performance. Now, Kentucky gets a similar opportunity against Russell in his first true road test.
Russell completed 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards last week while adding 86 rushing yards on 13 carries. He was also Alabama’s leading rusher.
Kentucky cannot allow Russell to scramble all afternoon and create explosive plays with his legs. The Wildcats need to make him beat them with his arm.
Alabama also has plenty of talent around him. Five different running backs combined for 32 carries, 128 yards and four touchdowns last week.
Ryan Coleman-Williams was the biggest threat through the air, catching five passes on 10 targets for 130 yards. He averaged 26 yards per catch and accounted for half of Alabama’s receiving yards.
That makes the return of Kentucky’s top two cornerbacks especially important.
Tehryon Nichols and Hassan Sykes are expected to return after missing the opener. Will Stein said this week, “I’m expecting us to be at full strength for this game.” and he wasn’t wrong after seeing the injury report come out.
Michael Carroll, Alabama’s best offensive lineman, is out Saturday.
Kentucky’s Offense Has a Major Challenge
Alabama’s defense was dominant in Week 1. The Crimson Tide allowed only 162 total yards, including two rushing yards. East Carolina also went 0-for-9 on third down and recorded only five first downs.
Kentucky will have to find ways to stay efficient.
The Wildcats need to establish the run, but quick screens and dump-off passes can also serve as an extension of the running game. Kenny Minchey needs to take the easy throws and consistently produce high-percentage completions.
Minchey threw for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first start, but Alabama will be a completely different challenge.
Protecting the football is just as important. Kentucky cannot afford to give Alabama short fields or extra possessions.
Three Keys to a Kentucky Win
Run the football: Kentucky needs to stay balanced and find ways to move the ball on the ground.
Limit turnovers: Winning the turnover battle could be the difference in a close game.
Win on third down: Kentucky needs to stay on the field offensively and get Alabama off the field defensively.
The defensive line must stop Alabama’s rushing attack while creating pressure and staying disciplined enough to prevent Russell from escaping the pocket.
Kentucky vs. Alabama Prediction
Alabama has more talent across its roster and dominated its Week 1 opponent. But this game is in Lexington, and Kentucky gets several key players back on defense.
Russell has never played a road game or an SEC game. Kentucky needs to make him uncomfortable early and force him to win with his arm.
If the Wildcats can run the football, avoid turnovers and make enough high-percentage plays through the air, I think they have a legitimate chance to pull off the upset.
Prediction: Kentucky 27, Alabama 24
Kenny Minchey is the offensive MVP, if Kentucky wins. He has to make the throws, protect the football and deliver in the biggest moments.
Defensively, Tehryon Nichols would be the MVP. He needs to win his matchups and help slow down Alabama’s explosive passing attack.
The Stein era already has its first win.
Now, Kentucky has a chance to make a statement in front of the Big Blue Nation.
