One of the biggest showdowns of the entire College Football season looms this weekend. The Ohio State Buckeyes travel down to Austin for huge battle with the Texas Longhorns. This is a budding rivalry, as it is now the third year in a row that the two will face-off. The purpose of today’s article is a full breakdown and comparison of the loaded offenses we will see Saturday night. Let’s jump in, starting with the quarterback position!

Quarterback

Julian Sayin (OSU): Sayin is a early-season Heisman contender with playoff experience. He is extremely accurate, throwing at a 77% completion rate last year for the Buckeyes, which was a single-season school record. It is his second year throwing to phenom wideout Jeremiah Smith, meaning he has formed a serious connection with one of the best WRs in the nation. .

Arch Manning (UT): Manning is a young talent looking to make a leap to the top of the CFB world this season. He is also an early-season Heisman contender. Arch’s strong suit is his ability to combine precise pocket passing with an explosive rushing ability. Experts have noted that Manning has significantly improved his decision-making and overall accuracy from 2025.

Winner: Julian Sayin

Julian’s high-level experience and connection with Jeremiah Smith gives him the edge. 1-0 Ohio State.

Running Back

Bo Jackson (OSU): Bo is an explosive, physical, slasher of a running back. He combines his 6’0″ 218 pound frame with lethal speed. This was showcased last week by a 65 yard touchdown. Jackson also demonstrates advanced patience, finding gaps that some veterans struggle to find. However, a concern is his elusiveness once getting past the line. He tends to run into secondary-level defenders.

Hollywood Smothers (UT): Hollywood is also considered a slasher; blending short, fast bursts with high intensity running. Smothers is not a super patient runner, when any sort of daylight is shown, he takes off. He also excels at working through tackles, averaging 4.4 yards after contact per rush during his time at NC State. Smothers is also a receiving threat, catching a touchdown in week one against Texas State. On top of that, second string back Raleek Brown adds in a significant level of talent and depth.

Winner: Hollywood Smothers

Hollywood’s versatility and the talent of Brown backing him up gives him the edge, 1-1.

Wide Receivers

OSU (Jeremiah Smith, Devin McCuin, Brandon Inniss): This is an absolutely loaded receiving corp, headlined by Heisman contender Jeremiah Smith. Everyone knows what Smith brings. Devin McCuin had a promising season opener, going for 97 yards and a touchdown. He uses his speed to his advantage at all times. Brandon Inniss is an elite slot receiver, who gets open with his physicality and toughness. This is a nice contrast from the raw speed and route-running skill of Smith and McCuin.

Texas (Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Emmett Mosley V): Cam Coleman brings extreme size with his 6’3″ 204 pound frame, combining that with raw athleticism. That combination makes him a highly regarded vertical threat. Ryan Wingo uses his frame and physicality to his advantage. He functions as a multi-level threat capable of stretching the field or turning short screens into big plays. Emmett Mosley V is a highly versatile and physical threat for the Longhorns, doing a little bit of everything on the offensive side of the ball.

Winner: Texas WR Room (2-1)

While Jeremiah Smith is the best overall player, the overall depth of Texas gives them the win. We still gave OSU one point, but Texas got two.

Tight End

Nate Roberts (OSU): Roberts is ready to take on a starting role this season after appearing in all 14 games for the Buckeyes last year.  He is considered a “jack-of-all-trades” type player. Roberts has an extremely versatile skill set, allowing him to set meaningful blocks and break down field for big plays. OSU’s TE room isn’t a strong suit, but Roberts has some serious skill.

Emaree Winston (UT): Despite Emaree Winston being listed, Texas does not have a designated TE1. They run a squad of Michael Masunas, Winston, Nick Townsend and Spencer Shannon. Masunas and Shannon provide high-level run blocking. Winston and Townsend are known as the more athletic duo, you will see them as the main pass-catchers for the Longhorns. This is not a super talented TE room, the depth is what appeals.

Winner: Emaree Winston

Texas’ overall depth gives them the win over Roberts. 4-2 Texas.

Offensive Line

OSU: Ohio State has a front unit facing a lot of questions. This is not a strong suit for OSU, as the offensive line was one of the main causes of the Buckeyes’ early playoff loss to Miami last season. They return four of those starters from last season and have made some necessary adjustments. This will be the first major test for the Buckeyes line.

Texas: The Texas offensive line is an experienced, re-tooled unit focused on better pass protection for quarterback Arch Manning and improved execution in outside zone running schemes. Offensive line is also not a strong suit for the Longhorns, but the experience they do have will help in a big game.

Winner: Texas

The extra experience that Texas has gives them a slight win over OSU.

Wrap-Up

The Texas offense gets the slight nod at several positons, meaning they look much better on paper. Despite this, this match-up will be a thriller that comes down to the end. Both squads have the talent to go toe-to-toe with one another.
