The Southeastern Conference did not lose a game in the opening week of the College Football season. A perfect 16-0, with numerous wins over the Power Four.
Key Results:
LSU: 51, Clemson: 10
Head coach Lane Kiffin and LSU made the Clemson Tigers look like an FCS opponent in their first game. Quarterback Sam Leavitt totaled 343 total yards on the day, and the Tigers nearly reached 650 as a team.
There was some concern after an interception thrown on the first drive, but they erased that quickly, scoring 51 consecutive points. LSU will play Louisiana Tech, who scored 80 points in their first game, before the highly anticipated matchup against Ole Miss.
Auburn: 17, Baylor: 16
It wasn’t pretty, but Auburn won their first game under new head coach Alex Golesh. Quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 3 interceptions, but was solid enough to take down the Bears in Atlanta.
This was a game that was headlined by the total turnovers. There were 5 in the game, and both teams will have to fix those issues, but Auburn’s defense was promising against Baylor, making quarterback DJ Lagway struggle.
Auburn will also play a Sun Belt Conference opponent in Southern Miss, before opening conference play against Florida.
Ole Miss: 41, Louisville: 38
A slow first half turned into a track meet in the second. Head coach Pete Golding came in to lead the Rebels as a defensive minded coach, but gave up nearly 500 yards to Louisville, mainly in the second half.
It was still a great win for Ole Miss, and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss showed off his talent, connecting with wide receiver Deuce Alexander twice for touchdowns. Alexander totaled 159 yards on the day.
Ole Miss will have to figure out the defense, and will get a chance in their home opener against UNC-Charlotte.
Week 2
Week 2 in the SEC is highlighted by two matchups against the Big Ten Conference.
Oklahoma will head to Michigan to take on the Wolverines after their controversial finish to their opening game, squeaking by against Western Michigan. The Sooners defense should feast against a weak Michigan offense.
Ohio State will play Texas at 7:30 p.m. in one of the most anticipated nonconference games of the year. Both teams struggled in their matchup last year, with the Buckeyes coming out on top 14-7. This time around, the game should be much more offense heavy, with star quarterbacks and wide receivers on both teams.
Conference play opens up as well, with Kentucky hosting Alabama for another one of the Wildcats’ early conference games. It is a great opportunity for new head coach Will Stein to make an early statement, but will have to get by the Crimson Tide.
Tennessee will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech, where freshman quarterback Fazion Brandon was excellent in the Volunteers opener.
