In news first reported by Pete Nakos of On3, the SEC has sued LSU and Lane Kiffin in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. LSU president Wade Rousse and athletic director Verge Ausberry are also named as defendants.

The filing landed the same day a Baton Rouge judge is hearing whether to convert an existing temporary restraining order into a preliminary injunction. If that injunction holds, LSU would have a clearer path to play former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both of whom signed NFL contracts this summer before committing to the Tigers.

The SEC has already adopted steep penalties for schools that roster former professional athletes. Rosters are due Friday, 24 hours before LSU opens Saturday against Clemson.

In the complaint, the conference argues LSU is violating the SEC’s First Amendment right of association by trying to compel the league to accept conduct it says runs counter to its mission. The SEC asked for a preliminary and permanent injunction.

“Defendants waged a deliberate and coordinated campaign to recruit professional athletes to play football for LSU during the 2026-27 season, including players who had signed NFL contracts with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” the SEC said.

How the two courts rule will say a lot about whether conferences can still enforce their own roster rules. This is developing.

Without being too hyperbolic, this case will likely decide if conferences hold any power to self-govern. If courts side with LSU, degradation of conferences could follow. If the courts side with the SEC, LSU is going to face severe punishments.

This could be the end of the LSU/SEC relationship.
