This Week in Norse Sports: 8/23-8/30

This was the first week where things truly took off for college sports, and NKU’s teams had games all over the place!

Player of the week: Natalie Newman

Women’s Soccer:

The Norse Women’s Soccer team won 3-2 on Sunday 8/23 with a victory over Ohio at home! They moved to 3-0. Riley Evans opened the scoring with a penalty, Erykah Cornett netted the second, and Megan Molner scored the game winning goal in the 49th minute. This makes 5 goals for Norse leader Molner. This was the first time NKU has beaten OU in Highland Heights.

The Norse continued their hot start to the year on Thursday against Bellarmine, getting to 4-0 to start the season behind a Natalie Newman brace. She scored twice, which was more than enough to take care of the Knights as keeper Donna Bundy grabbed her first clean sheet a of her career.

The Norse could not continue their hot start to the year on Sunday 8/30 against Morehead State. They out-shot the Eagles 19-8, however, the Eagles keeper Allie Lammers recorded 9 saves while Bundy had just 1. NKU also had 10 corners to just 4 for the Eagles. Sometimes it is more about being opportunistic than it is about dominating the game on paper.

The Women’s Soccer team will be back in action this week, playing Sunday 9/6 vs. Cincinnati in Highland Heights. After a busy start to the year, the Norse will use some time to practice and get their conditioning back under them.

Men’s Soccer

The Men’s Soccer team had their home opener on Monday 8/24. Carlos Merce scored in the 12th minute, and Silas Borgman kept that going right out of the second half kickoff. However, Southern indiana flipped the script and scored twice (68th and 84th minutes) and the game ended in a draw.

The Men’s Soccer team is in action Sunday 8/30 at 7:00 Sunday night. The Norse look to grab their first win of the year! They will then travel to Columbus, Ohio to play the Buckeyes at 4:30 on 9/3.

Women’s Volleyball

The WVB squad participated in the Jim Stone Classic in Columbus, Ohio this weekend. They opened it with a 3 set to 2 win over Fresno State on Friday. This match took a magical comeback from sets 3 and 4 to win. The Norse led in everything except for blocks, where the Bulldogs handled the Norse. Luci Heid had 16 kills for the Norse and was the player of the game.

On Saturday, they lost 3 sets to 2 against Bowling Green on Saturday in Columbus. After getting up 2 sets to 0, they let the Falcons come back in dramatic fashion. Ivey Stocks had 17.5 points, including 14 kills and 4 blocks to be the player of the game for the Norse.

Sunday saw the Norse take on Ohio State and they fell in 4 sets (3-1). They will be back in action on Friday for a double header in the Best Western invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. They will play American University at 10AM and then Arkansas State at 4PM. You can catch all of these games on Youtube! They will then play at 5:00 on ESPN+ Saturday against Bowling Green.

Triathlon

The Norse Women’s Triathlon team opened their campaign in Beaver Falls, PA where they finished 6th placed (out of 6), and had no competitors finish higher than 40. Charlotte Cunningham finished 40th to lead the Norse.
