The best team in the tournament won the World Cup. They only conceded once in eight matches. They came from a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their first game to a win over Argentina in extra time. Spain has won the World Cup.

It took extra time, and it was only a victory by a goal, but Spain were dominant in this match. They took 12 shots on target, Argentina didn’t take any. The attack was firing all match, but they couldn’t bring home a goal in regular time.

Defensive midfielder Rodri and right winger Lamine Yamal were the most threatening players in Spain’s starting 11. Rodri was taken out in the 90th minute after another perfect performance, and Yamal was dangerous all game, and he could have had a goal and an assist to go with the win.

Argentina felt like they were down a player all match, but central midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow in second half stoppage time, sending him off. Argentina spent the first 90 minutes defending, and would have to defend shorthanded for 30 more.

The goal came in the 106th minute. Substitute Nico Williams headed a cross into a dangerous area of the box, and substitute Ferran Torres fired it into the top of the goal.

Argentina would get their best chances in the final few minutes, but Spain held on to become World Champions for the second time.

Centre back Pau Cubarsi won the Best Young Player Award after commanding the Spanish defense at 19 years of age. Goalkeeper Unai Simon won the Golden Glove for his record shattering 7 clean sheets. 

Rodri won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. He did not have a single goal contribution in the tournament, but there wasn’t a single more controlling player in the tournament. He started the chances and he made sure opposing chances were stopped. Simply one of the best defensive midfielders of all time.

Spain and Rodri lifted the World Cup as champions of 2026.
