World Cup Quarterfinals: Merino sends Spain to the Semifinals

Spain got through to the Semifinals, not on their flair, but through their stability and elite defense.

The chances were coming for Spain early, and they took the lead on a goal from defensive midfielder Fabian Ruiz, his first of the tournament.

One thing that Spain was doing well at the World Cup, it was preventing goals, not having allowed a single one up until this match. Belgium finally snapped that streak, attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne set up right back Timothy Castagne, whose cross found the head of striker Charles De Ketelaere.

Belgium were now in a great spot, scoring the first goal against Spain of the tournament, but that had to try to win it without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was subbed off with injury in the 71st minute.

The substitute would prove costly, as centre back Pau Cubarsi struck one right at substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the 88th minute, who couldn’t hold onto it, and the rebound was hit in by substitute Mikel Merino, his second winning goal of the tournament.

Spain will play France in the Semifinals, with the winner likely being the favorite in the World Cup Final.
