Zoom Diallo Focused on Changing the Narrative at Kentucky: ‘I Need to Show That I Can Win’

LEXINGTON, Ky. — New Kentucky point guard Zoom Diallo has one thing on his mind heading into the 2026-27 season: winning.

“Most definitely, that’s something that I need to show, that I can win, and why not do it at Kentucky?” Diallo said.

Diallo faced plenty of criticism during his two seasons at Washington, however, since transferring to Kentucky this offseason, that noise has only amplified. One of those critics was ESPN analyst and former head coach Fran Fraschilla, who questioned Diallo’s ability to win after two losing seasons with the Huskies.

Despite the off the court news, Zoom’s on-court progression tells a different story. A former McDonald’s All-American and top-30 prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, Diallo played two seasons at Washington. From his freshman to sophomore season, he improved in nearly every statistical category and developed into one of the better guards in the Big Ten. However, despite his individual progression, Washington posted a combined 29-35 record over those two seasons.

“If I can win at Kentucky, and show that I can win, whatever anybody had to say about me in the past, about me not being able to win, that just makes it quiet right there,” Diallo said. This shows just how impactful and motivating the social media “noise” is for athletes, especially in today’s chronically online society.

“I know Kentucky basketball, the standard there is, there’s no losing over here. They can’t afford to lose.”

Diallo is not making the move to Lexington alone. Former Washington teammate Franck Kepnang also transferred to Kentucky this offseason, giving the Wildcats a pair of players already familiar with one another.

“Me and Franck are very close. He’s considered family forever to me,” Diallo said. “I feel like we both have winning attributes, and us coming here, already knowing our chemistry, and know what we already do at a high level, I feel like let’s go change that narrative, that we can win.”

Diallo also said the offseason has been extremely competitive, noting that everyone on the roster has shown up every day with the right intentions, positive energy, and a willingness to learn and improve.

As Kentucky’s expected starting point guard, Diallo knows leadership comes with the position.

“I’m just a guy that doesn’t want to lose, and just being a leader, and being the point guard, one, you have to lead. Everyone looks at you as an example. I feel like if I’m intense, it’s going to put more fuel to my teammates, and it’s more positive fuel, trying to instill confidence in my guys, and just let them know, we can go do this, ramp it up, let’s be intent, let’s be active, both defensively and offensively,” Diallo said.

He also spoke highly of expected backcourt partner Alex Wilkins, the Furman transfer who Mark Pope recently said gives him “SGA vibes,” referencing former Kentucky star, back-to-back NBA MVP, and NBA champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Diallo described Wilkins as a dynamic guard who is equally dangerous on and off the ball. He also mentioned how difficult it will be for opposing defenses to guard both of them while also accounting for the rest of Kentucky’s talented roster.

It’s clear Diallo has embraced the expectations that come with wearing Kentucky across his chest. Winning has eluded him through the first two years of his college career, but he believes Lexington provides an opportunity to change that narrative. With a fresh start, a new mindset, and a leadership role on one of college basketball’s premier programs, Diallo is focused on one thing: helping Kentucky win.
