World Cup Preview: Group K

Group K has possibly the biggest storyline in the entire tournament. Lionel Messi has already completed soccer in 2022 by lifting the World Cup trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo has not, and will have one chance to win it as a player.

Colombia has been rolling in the past couple of years. Argentina just barely scraped a win past them in the 2024 Copa America final. James Rodriguez is a world cup legend, and he is back for what will likely be the last time. Luis Diaz has also had an incredible 2026 for Bayern Munich with 26 goals and 19 assists in 51 appearances. Although nobody on the squad is as good as Diaz is, Colombia has the attacking power to get some wins against anyone.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo will be making the first appearance at the World Cup since 1974, and have drawn one of the toughest group stage schedules out of anyone. Qualifying through the intercontinental playoffs, they have big game experience, and Yoane Wissa will be key if they want to shock the world.

Portugal is under more pressure to win this World Cup than any other nation. Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be back to this stage, as he would be 45 in 2030. This is the team however to bring the trophy to Portugal for the first time in their history. Ronaldo won’t even be close to the best player on this team, Bruno Fernandes broke the English Premier League assist record this past season. Vitinha is one of the favorites for the Ballon D’Or this year. Rafael Leao has become underrated. Bernardo Silva is still serviceable in the midfield. Nuno Mendes is the best fullback in the world. Portugal is stronger now than ever during Ronaldo’s peak, if they want to be champions of the world, now is the time.

Uzbekistan is making their World Cup debut, and will be led by young centre back Abdukodir Khusanov, who just finished a strong season at Manchester City. This is the start of what should be a good Uzbekistan generation, but it is just a start.

Portugal is too good, and under too much pressure, to go out in the group stage, and will dominate this group. Colombia will be tricky however, and be right on their tail throughout the opening round of the competition.
