Kentucky Lands Five-Star 2027 Prospect Ryan Hampton During Official Visit

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The first recruiting domino has officially fallen for Kentucky in the 2027 class.

Five-star wing Ryan Hampton, the No. 6 overall player in the country according to On3, committed to Mark Pope and the Wildcats during his official visit to Lexington this weekend.

The 6-foot-6 standout becomes Kentucky’s first commitment in the 2027 recruiting class and gives Pope one of the highest-rated pledges of his tenure so far.

Hampton brings a versatile offensive game that has made him one of the most sought-after prospects in the country. His greatest strength is his ability to score from multiple areas of the floor. He is an explosive athlete who thrives attacking the basket, using his size, length, and physicality to finish through contact.

He also possesses the ball-handling ability to create his own shot, making him a difficult matchup for defenders both in transition and in half-court situations. Whether driving to the rim, pulling up from mid-range, or finding ways to score around the basket, Hampton has shown the ability to generate offense when his team needs a bucket.

Beyond scoring, Hampton contributes as a strong rebounder and playmaker for his position. His length and athleticism allow him to impact the game in several ways, and his overall skill set gives him the versatility to play multiple roles on the wing.

While his three-point shooting consistency and defensive discipline remain areas for development, the physical tools and natural talent are already in place for him to become a high-level player at the college level.

For Kentucky, this commitment could be significant beyond just adding a talented player. Hampton becomes Mark Pope’s first true blue-chip, national-level recruiting win since arriving in Lexington. Whether this is the start of a larger trend remains to be seen, but landing a prospect of Hampton’s caliber is a major step for the Wildcats on the recruiting trail.

It also appeared Hampton thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Lexington throughout the weekend, taking photos around campus and spending time with the coaching staff.

His brother, RJ Hampton, is also familiar with Kentucky. The former five-star recruit was heavily pursued by John Calipari before ultimately bypassing college basketball to play professionally with the New Zealand Breakers. RJ later spent time in the NBA before continuing his professional career overseas.

Kentucky now has its first piece of the 2027 class, and it’s a big one.
