World Cup Preview: Group A

Group A will nearly entirely take place in host country Mexico, which is a huge competitive advantage. The host country has seen more success than they would have if the World Cup took place anywhere else, the Russians made the quarterfinals after hosting in 2018 for example.

Czechia got into the field after a pair of penalty shootout wins in the UEFA playoff, knocking out Ireland and Denmark in the process. Most of the players in the squad play at home in the Czech league, but the team has some stars at big clubs. Patrik Schick is the most notable, scoring 16 goals in the Bundesliga this season at Bayer Leverkusen. Tomas Soucek and Pavel Sulc are also key contributors to teams in the top five leagues.

Mexico has a great opportunity to go on a big run playing on home soil. The squad has just come off Gold Cup titles in 2023 and 2025, but failed to make it out of the group stage in the Copa America. El Tri has a solid makeup of players, with great players in defense and in the midfield. The question will be if the goalkeeping will hold up, and if the team can score enough goals.

Making it back to the World Cup for the first time since hosting in 2010 is a big deal to South Africa, but may seem a bit overpowered in a strong Group A. Lyle Foster just finished a season for Burnley in the Premier League, scoring 3 goals, and is the biggest star on this South African squad, he will have to have a big tournament if they want to make any noise.

The old guard for South Korea may be on the way out, but a new crop has emerged and is looking to take their country back to the World Cup knockouts. Heung-Min Son is in his swansong at LAFC and will still be a name to watch, but Jae-Sung Lee is performing at Mainz, Min-Jae Kim has been rock solid at Bayern Munich and Kang-In Lee is deep in the rotation for a stacked PSG attack, and has been great. South Korea still has a great forward group, and will be a problem for everyone in the group

Group A doesn’t have the biggest names, but it is one of the deeper groups in the entire tournament. Mexico will win the group with the home field advantage, and the game between South Korea and Czechia will determine who finishes second.
