Kam Mercer grew up with his dad being a Cincinnati Bearcat fan. Born in 2009, his early memories of basketball likely revolved around the Mick Cronin era of Cincinnati basketball. He grew up a Cincinnati fan as well.
Fast Forward to now, and Kam has committed to Cincinnati and coach Calhoun just weeks after visiting both Cincinnati and Xavier. Everything I had been told had indicated this recruitment was likely to end in Clifton, and now we get it early.
Kam is a 6’4″ SG who is one of the most exciting prospects in the entire country. Mercer currently plays for Princeton High School in Cincinnati (averaged 14/5/3/2 en route to a state title this year), his AAU team is the Indy Heat Gym Rats (EYBL), and he is a member of the USA FIBA u16 team who won the Gold at the AmeriCup. From what I can tell, Mercer is the highest-ranked recruit to land at Cincinnati, surpassing Lance Stephenson (247 Sports). This has been a unique path for Kam, as he’s gotten to play and practice against high major talent for years at all levels of his game. When practices consist of high major guys like Javon Bardwell and Taylen Kinney on the wing and Tyran Frazier down low, that experience exponentially speeds up growth.
From an on the court standpoint, Mercer is a 5* recruit per multiple recruiting services, and 247 Composite rankings have him as the 11th national player, 1st SG, and top player in Ohio for the class of 2028. Kam, a lefty, is an offensive machine, but renowned as an unselfish player on that side of the ball, turning down contested looks to get his teammates involved. nbadraftroom.com calls him a well built forward who gets above the rim with ease. They also compliment his ball handles, passing ability and overall play making for his size. However, one key thing that they point out is that his defensive intensity is extremely high. In high school recruiting, this is extremely difficult to find, so having a guy bought in on both sides of the ball is a significant plus.
The most telling things to me is just how supportive he’s been of teammates and other guys around him, constantly using his 60K+ following to boost people up. Kam’s character shines through, despite not having met him yet.
Cincinnati is getting a likely lottery pick in their 2027 class, and him reclassifying means Bearcat fans should be much more confident in getting him to campus!
