Cincinnati Bearcats Land Eric Mahaffey from Akron!

Cincinnati continues their hot streak on the recruiting trail, this time grabbing sharp shooting guard Eric Mahaffey, a 6’6″, 200lb guard from Akron! Mahaffey is from Cincinnati, he played for Moeller. His freshman year saw him average 7.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.

What to Expect on the Court

Mahaffey averaged 21.9 minutes per game and earned 11 starts for Akron, proving to be a versatile “do-it-all” threat. Defensively, he chipped in 0.6 blocks and 0.7 steals per contest, but perhaps more importantly, he showed great discipline by averaging only 2.2 fouls. If he can maintain that production while adjusting to the physicality of the Big 12, Cincinnati has secured a high-value asset for the next three seasons.

As a true three-level scorer, Eric’s efficiency numbers are eye-popping:

  • Inside: 53% from 2-point range
  • Beyond the Arc: 39% from deep
  • Charity Stripe: 76% from the FT line

While currently best suited as a complementary piece—evidenced by a modest 16.9% usage rate—his offensive efficiency is exceptional. That level of production on low volume points to a high basketball IQ and an innate ability to play within himself.

Defensively, he is a rock-solid presence with significant upside as a rebounder. With the right development in Calhoun’s system, the potential is there for him to evolve into a defensive game-changer. Bringing this hometown talent back to Cincinnati is a major win—not just for the immediate rotation, but for the long-term future of the program.

Player Comparison:

Player comparisons are extremely fun. Especially when there is a local angle that I can add in. Bearcat fans will fondly remember Tre Scott. Mahaffey has significant developmental upside, and is from Cincinnati, hitting that similar trajectory. Both guys have toughness and high IQ that Cincinnati fans expect from their guys. I expect Eric to be a fan favorite by the end of his career.

Overall, I love this rotational addition. Yes, I do expect him to be more of a developmental piece, but I expect to see significant contributions from him this year in the rotation.
