College Hoops Tuesday Preview: Bracketology & Bubble Watch

We had two tournament-level games last night. First, from the ACC, we saw Louisville and North Carolina battle in Chapel Hill. We then got an electric matchup between Houston and Kansas at Phog Allen!

North Carolina used a strong second half to pull away from the Cardinals, and despite a Cardinal rally, UNC picks up a huge win over Louisville. UNC will move towards the edge of the 5 line depending on how other results fall. Louisville remains on the 6.

Houston/Kansas: Tre White – Career Night! He helps the Jayhawks improve to 40-0 on Big Monday under Bill Self. Houston hadn’t lost 3 straight since 2017… that just happened! The Big 12 is just built different this year! Houston moves a bit back on the 2 line, remaining where they are for now, but volatile with Purdue/Illinois close behind! KU jumps Nebraska on the seed list, but stays a 3.

My updated bracket reflects the two results from last night!

Tuesday: Miami (OH) @ Eastern Michigan | 6:30, ESPN+ Miami comes into Ypsilanti favored by 8.5 points and looking to make it 28-0!

Duke @ Notre Dame | 7:00, ESPN Duke is favored by 17.5 on the ROAD. The Blue Devils will look to avoid a letdown after their huge win over Michigan in DC this weekend.

NC State @ Virginia | 7:00, ACCN This is one of the better matchups we’ll see this week. UVA is coming in as 5.5-point favorites; however, this one feels destined to be close! UVA is a 4 seed, while NCSU is a 7. A win here could help push the Wolfpack up, while a win for UVA would help solidify their standing on the 4 line.

Cincinnati @ Texas Tech | 7:00, ESPN2 Texas Tech is a 4 seed, despite losing Toppin for the year. However, the Bearcats are hot and looking to make a tournament push! A win over Texas Tech would mean it is time to start having legitimate conversations about UC making the field. A loss, however, would be very difficult for the Bearcats to overcome. Texas Tech is still within reach of a 3, but needs to win here to avoid falling back a bit on the 4 line.

Saint Louis @ Dayton | 7:00, ESPN+ SLU is one of, if not the best mid-majors in the country. However, playing in Dayton is never easy. SLU comes in favored by 5.5 points. The Billikens are looking to wrap up their tournament bid and this would get them much closer.

West Virginia @ Oklahoma State | 7:00, CBSSN This is practically an elimination game. OKST is all but eliminated already, but this would be the nail in the coffin. WVU is also nearly eliminated, but in a bit of a better spot. A win here would be monumental to keeping them close! The Cowboys are favored by 1.5 in this key game.

Kentucky @ South Carolina | 7:00, SECN While I do not expect to see UK miss the tournament… the fan unrest if they lose in Columbia tonight would be chaotic. They’re favored by 6.5 and looking to get to 18-10 on the year. Currently projecting as an 8.

Minnesota @ Michigan | 8:30, BTN Michigan is favored by 22.5 here and they likely have some anger to get off their chest. Look for them to come out quick tonight in the Crisler Center.

Arizona @ Baylor | 9:00, ESPN2 Arizona could be without Peat and Dell Orso tonight in this tough matchup in Waco. Baylor has to win out to have any chance of being close to the field. Arizona is favored by 9.5.

Iowa State @ Utah | 9:00, FS1 I expect Iowa State to dominate the 2-12 Utes here. The Cyclones are favored by 13.5, and while they probably have to be perfect to do so, a 1 seed isn’t out of the picture.

Tennessee @ Missouri | 9:00, SECN Tennessee heads into Columbia to take on a Missouri team who has done really well at home this year. The Tigers will look to get themselves in a much better spot overall with a win tonight. Tennessee is favored by 3.5. UT is a 5, while Missouri is an 11 (above Dayton).

Arizona State @ TCU | 9:00, CBSSN I have the Frogs as my last team in the field. That means they have zero margin for error. Tonight against ASU, they need to win, as a loss would add another hole to their already dicey resume. They’re favored by 6.5.

Miami (FL) @ Florida State | 9:00, ACCN FSU has caused complete pandemonium this year in the ACC. They’re just good enough to compete, but not good enough consistently to be a tournament team. Miami comes into this favored by 1.5 and they project as an 8 seed right now.

Auburn @ Oklahoma | 9:00, ESPNU Auburn cannot lose this. They are currently 15-12, and their strength of schedule/big wins keep them in, but a bad loss would push them down quickly. They’re favored by 1.5 here, but they should play as a desperate team in this one. They’re projected as a 10 seed currently.

UCF @ BYU | 11:00, ESPN2 UCF projects as a 9 seed in good shape. BYU is a tournament lock and a 6 seed right now. BYU is favored by 10.5. This game means a ton for both teams. For BYU, it’s trying to fight up towards that 5 line, for UCF? Just trying to safely get into the field.

New Mexico @ Nevada | 11:00, CBSSN Late-night bubble action is the best! New Mexico comes into this one as 1.5-point underdogs, but they are projected as an 11 for me. Nevada is solid and just won’t have enough to get into the field. This matchup will be fun!

USC @ UCLA | 11:00, FS1 The Battle for LA in Pauley! UCLA is favored by 6.5. This matchup means so much for both teams. Currently, UCLA is a 10 seed after picking up the huge win over Illinois this weekend. USC, however, has fallen out of the field after a rough couple of weeks.

Sun Belt

4 games, all with big implications! Marshall and Troy are taking on inferior opponents at home. Coastal Carolina and Georgia State are battling in what figures to be a toss-up. Southern Miss travels to Arkansas State a game behind and looking to close the gap. However, the Red Wolves have other plans!

OVC

Three-way tie for first? No big deal. The OVC gets it! Morehead State takes on Southern Indiana in a key matchup in Morehead. The Eagles are favored by 8.5.

MAC

6 games. Massive implications, everywhere! Miami is mentioned above, Bowling Green, Toledo, Kent State and Akron are all 10+ point favorites tonight. UMass and Ball State will battle in Muncie in the game of the night in the conference.

MVC

Just one matchup, however, it is CRITICAL! Bradley and UIC will battle in Chicago. Bradley is 12-6, while UIC is 11-7. UIC is favored by 2.5. If that line holds, we would have a 3 way tie for 2nd!
